About The Summer School
We are pleased to announce that the fourth Rainbow Connection Summer School will take place between August 16 - 28th 2010.

The Show:
The performance at the end of the 2 weeks is a 2 hour full scale theatrical production with excellent costumes, lighting and sound. There will be 2 performances on Saturday 28th August at the Civic Theatre, Doncaster. ‘MUSICALITY” will be packed full of great musical moments from shows including, We Will Rock You, Sister Act, and Barnum.

Who Can Attend?
You don’t have to be a Rainbow Connection student to take part in the “Rainbow Connection Summer School.” Our summer school is open to people all ages who are enthusiastic about performing but bear in mind it is probably not suitable for very young children due to the amount of rehearsal time required. If you are in any doubt please contact us for further information.

Learning Objectives:
To provide a secure, supportive environment for participants to improve their existing skills and develop new ones. Lots of imaginative fun, learning new songs and dances and preparing for a large scale professional standard performance on August 28th.
Ensemble Singing, Solo Singing, Drama Games and Dance will all be part of 2 great weeks of musical theatre training.

The Venues:
Rehearsals take place at the Northern Jazz Centre on Beckett Road which is within walking distance of the town centre.. We have 4 rehearsal rooms at the centre and this allows us to keep everyone busy all day.
The show itself will be held at the Civic Theatre in Doncaster.

Schedule:

Scripts and rehearsal CD’s are sent out 4 - 6 weeks before the start of the Summer School. There will then be an audition day for those who want to audition for a featured role/solo. This is not compulsory.
The first day will allow everyone to get to know each other with drama warm-up games, vocal and dance warm-ups, also the casting will be announced so everyone will know which numbers they are in.
Daily rehearsals will be split into three groups, one group doing music rehearsals while the other does dance/blocking rehearsals, we will also incorporate sessions learning how to put on stage make-up.
The last three days of the school will take place at the Civic Theatre for technical and dress rehearsals.

Cost
Total cost for 2 weeks is £250 per person.

The Team
Rainbow Connection was founded in 2003 by Paul & Deborah Mellors, with the aim of offering high quality musical training for beginners to professionals. Having spent many years in the industry Paul & Debbie were aware of the void between how music & drama are traditionally taught and what training is needed to have a career in the entertainment industry. Since its’ conception Rainbow Connection has quickly gained a reputation as a leading private tuition facility. Paul & Debbie’s hard work is now starting to show with a number of students securing places at top colleges and others gaining work in the industry.
Rainbow Connection also run 3 award winning choirs and are very proud of their Youth Choir who in 2009 won the
Senior Choir Award at the Music For Youth National Festival and subsequently appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in the Schools Prom.

Richard Swerrun is a true “all-rounder”, not only as a singer and actor but also as a qualified dance teacher and fellow of the R.A.D.
His West End debut was in the lavish musical ‘Y’ at the Piccadilly Theatre for which he won the Variety Club of Great Britain Award for Best Vocalist. Richard went to star in many musicals. Joseph in ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ (New London, Drury Lane) ‘Oklahoma!’ (National Tour) Robin Prince of Sherwood (Piccadilly Theatre) and West Side Story at Her Majesty’s Theatre receiving an award for his performance as ‘Tony’ from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. During this time he also recorded his first album ‘In Another Time’.
In cabaret, Richard has performed all over the country and has appeared on the World cruise of the QE2, he has sung with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Syd Lawrence Orchestra and most major symphony orchestras. He won acclaim for his one-man show “
Richard Swerrun in Concert” which ‘The Times’ reviewed as ‘A gut–wrenching tour de-force’.
Richard appeared as Jaeger in Ken Russell’s film “
Elgar”, toured as Lord Lebanon in “The Case of the Frightened Lady”, Boone in “Whistle Down the Wind” and played Satan in “Roll Over Jehovah” at the New End Theatre, Hampstead and the Dentist in “Little Shop of Horrors” at the Landor. He has also directed, choreographed & starred in “Best Little Whorehouse In Texas” in which the ‘Mail on Sunday’ described him as stealing the show.

Musicality 2009
“I find it difficult to believe that in the short time available that a production could be so well choreographed, rehearsed and presented to an audience with such professionalism”. Cllr Tony Sockett

“What an absolutely, stupendous, humdinger of a show my congratulations to you all.  The direction was superb, the music, stunning and the performance by everyone out of this world. They really do have the 'X' factor and put a new light on the children and teenagers of Donny”. Bob Hayward

Hi Paul & Debbie, just a note....... what have you done to my children? They are possessed by a dancing and singing spirit. They won’t stop singing or dancing from the moment they get up or go to bed. They are still at it now. I think that you must be doing a fab job with this Summer School I’ve never known them like this. Anyway I just wanted you to know how much they’re enjoying it. Can’t wait to see the show.

i absolutely loved the summer school. i thought it was extremely well organised and thought through with just the right number of students. i thought that the rehearsal space was ideal as it had different rooms allowing for more than one activity at a time. i found working with richard so much help. to hear first and of what it is like is great and i learnt so much from him, especially in the dance areas. i absolutely love the majestic theatre and cannot put into words how much i enjoyed yet again being able to perform in a big theatre like that. even though i rehearse will a lot of the students often the standards in the show really impressed me as did it my family.
i honestly cant say there is anything i think could have been improved.
thank you for the experience and you can definitely put my name down for next year please :D

I was totally impressed with the whole summer school 10/10, Chloe has already asked if she can do it again next time and hasn't shut up about it yet(something tells me she enjoyed ever so slightly, he he he), soooo please please please put another one on. She has come on so much over the summer school.
I felt the whole organisation was really professional, fun and value for money from start to end . I also felt at ease that Chloe was in good and safe hands the whole time.
As for the Show it was far better than I or Chloe’s dad ever imagined it would be. Its the 1st time we have been to the Majestic and was blown away with it. But I  think the show would have been excellent anywhere. from the standard of the final performance it was  easy to see  how much time and effort  was put in by all. We are looking forward to the dvd so we can watch it all again, and show it off to our family and friends! So to sum it up I or even We thought the whole thing was truly FANTASTIC!!!! Thank you all so much for ending  Chloe’s 6 weeks holidays on a absolute high.

thank you very much. We both enjoyed the summer school very much and enjoyed being taught by you and richard. we feel we have learned a lot from it. my parents and sister enjoyed watching the show and thought it was brilliant and the standard was very high and professional. my family, friends and dance teacher all say that over the last 2 weeks we both seem to have gained in confidence. We hope we will be able to join the summer school next year because it was much better than the 1 we went to some years ago which put us off of attending summer schools until this year when we saw the advertisement and we thought we'd try it.
we would also like to ask you if we and my older sister who is 18 could start singing lessons with you?

Elizabeth and Catherine Law

one word ...FABULOUS!!!
all of it.
i miss richard.

I just want to say what a brilliant show and how much the girls enjoyed it - the show and the summer school leading up to it.  I was slightly worried that after the first few days they might struggle to get out of bed to make the (long to them!) journey to Doncaster, but we had no problems with that whatsoever, which must be a sure sign and testament to how much they were enjoying themselves!  They certainly learnt from their experience and the venues were very good.  We always like the Majestic Theatre.  The staff are generally helpful and the girls enjoy performing there.  We were very impressed with the ease (for us!) on sourcing costumes - what a good stock you have!!!  The show was of an excellent standard.  I think the way in which you worked gave a good impression of what it might be like to work in the profession.  Our family (grandad, nannies, aunts etc) particularly liked the lion king scene which was very effective all round.  Also the under the sea raised lots of laughs and enjoyment.  Also good was the fact that most children were given the opportunity (if wanted) to participate in solo/duets - it didn't appear that any child was singled out for special attention which I think is important in a summer school environment.  Rhiannon was very happy with her duet as she certainly didn't assume or expect that she would have a role (of course I got to be the proud mum too!!).  I know the girls were a bit unsure what to expect but they did enjoy the experience and would repeat it again.

It was absolutely brilliant!  I didn't want it to end and performing in the show has boosted my confidence a lot.  I enjoyed working as a team to make the show work.  Richard was really helpful and showed us how to improve our performance. I loved being at the Jazz Centre and the theatre was excellent and reminded me of the London Palladium it was so cool!  The show was fabulous and the comments I heard outside said the same.  People were really impressed. I hope the Summer School runs again next year as I miss it already!. Thank you for giving up your time to run it.

The standard of the show was fantastic. As you know Jayde, 2 weeks ago went to a summer school in London run by one of the biggest name theatre schools and I was totally disappointed, they had no costumes, not in a theatre setting and no microphones,I have the DVD if you want to see it, I think you will be shocked how poor it actually was. The final performance rated nil comparable to your summer school show. The venue was superb and catered well for people with disabilities. Overall the best show so far.

Congratulations for A Night At The Oscars - what a great night! It must be really satisfying to see such great performances, reward for all the hard work you both put into it. We know with the involvement we’ve had over the year just how much hard work it can be. The show was very professional, well managed and organised with the musical arrangement just right. You should be proud of what you achieved.
We are really grateful for the opportunities you have given Lizzie. To see the change in her ability and the amount of growing she has now is down to you both. Keep up the hard work.
